Supply strains Drive Asia’s methanol price to 3-year highs

The price of methanol in Asia has risen to more than 3 years, fuelled by continued supply strains exacerbated by the planned supply disruption in South-east Asia, according to the Bloomberg Energy News, Singapore, December 13.

The S & P Global General Energy Information Wednesday assessed CFR s methanol increased by $7 to $405 per ton, while CFR sea methanol was assessed at $416 per ton, up 10 dollars per ton.

The methanol price was last assessed at these levels above the time of March 12, 2014 per ton of USD 410 CFR and April 8, 2014 per ton of USD 420 CFR sea.

One company source said that the main reason for the Asian methanol price increase was the lack of regional supply, which resulted from the unexpected closure of the Malaysian national Oil Company’s 1.7 million-ton/year 2nd methanol plant due to technical problems.
